Dressember!!!!

Hey Ya'll!  Sorry its be so long since I've posted anything! :/ But I wanted to give everyone an update!

This December I have decided to participate in an awesome thing called
DRESSEMBER!
Everyday during the month of December my sisters and I are wearing dresses to support the work of International Justice Mission.  They are a non-for-profit  human rights organization that operates in countries all over the world to rescue victims of human trafficking and other abuse.  Go to their website to learn more: www.ijm.org

A way you can support us during this Dressember is by sponsoring us at a dollar a dress!
Let me know if you would like to sponsor me(Grace), Sara, Hope or Holly!

I will be taking pictures of all the dresses we wear and posting them on Instagram. You can view them here http://websta.me/n/obenfam  :D

Wearing a dress everyday is WAY harder than it sounds!  Especially for me.  I'm not really a "girly girl" and I don't usually wear dresses, so this is soooo not the norm!  But it is totally worth it.
If I can raise $30 that money can be used to provide aftercare for a survivor of sex trafficking, and if I can raise $111 it can give a family rescued from slavery freedom training, and if I can raise $222 that money can be used to provide medical care for a survivor of violence.  The list goes on.

Stand with me as I fight human trafficking this Dressember!!!

30 Day Challenge: Verse/Fact of the Day

Hey there everybody!  Wow, I haven't posted in a while, so today I decided that starting today I would post everyday for 30 days.  I will post a bible verse about justice, freedom, and/or loving the least of these, I will also give a fact about slavery and human trafficking.  It won't be easy, but I feel it's something I should do, not only to challenge myself, but to also help those who will read this to better understand what God says about justice. Hopefully by the end of these 30 days, you (And me:) will have God's perspective on loving His children.  So, here goes...

****************************

 :Verse of the day:
"The sprit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings to the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;"
Isaiah 61:1
(KJV)

:Fact of the day:
"Slavery occurs when one person completely controls another person, using violence or the threat of violence to maintain that control, exploits them economically, pays them nothing and they cannot walk away."

Battle for Justice

Here is a new post from IJM (International Justice Mission):

This battle for justice started in August 2010, when IJM helped local authorities rescue 42 children, women and men from a rock quarry a couple hours outside the city of Bangalore.  Before this they were forced to work for pennies--barely enough to feed their families--, but IJM helped bring them justice, and now they are thriving in freedom.  Click above to read the full story.

Do Something

Do Something.
This song is amazing.  Does anyone else agree?  It's letting the world know that it's time to do something.  Time to do something about poverty, about slavery, it's time to stand up for the weak.

"If not us than who? If not me then you --right now, it's time for us to do something. It's not enough to do nothing."

Stand for Freedom

April 9th, 2014:

One day for their everyday.

Students around the world are Standing for Freedom.  Standing twenty-four hours to make modern-day slavery known.

PROTECTION AND FREEDOM SHOULD BE AN EVERYDAY RIGHT FOR EVERYONE
"Routine & relentless violence is an everyday reality for those trapped in slavery.

The unchecked plague of slavery, rape, trafficking, illegal detention, land theft, police abuse and other brutality against the poor is a global crisis that undermines the well-intentioned fight for their freedom. Unless we STAND against it, nothing will change.

Last year, thousands of passionate college students raised awareness for the millions trapped in slavery.

On April 9, 2014, stand for 24 hours with us to forever change your community's awareness of the everyday violence of those trapped in slavery." {source}

BREAKING NEWS FROM IJM (International Justice Mission): NAIROBI KENYA

Late last week, these innocent men were set free from a Nairobi prison.
Silas, left, and Anthony, right celebrate freedom
Silas, left, and Anthony, right, celebrate freedom with their IJM lawyer, James Kironji
The young men—Anthony and Silas—had been living a nightmare for more than two years. They were languishing in a high-security prison, on trial for a violent robbery they never committed. Their only connection to the crime was the fact that they worked nearby. That’s it.
Terrified in jail, Anthony heard about an IJM lawyer from another prisoner. When we heard his story, we knew that he and Silas were innocent. And though the truth seemed so clear, we knew we had a fight ahead of us.
That fight for the truth ended last week, two years after we began. Anthony’s parents were in the room when the judge declared both men innocent.
Silence filled the tiny room, as everyone tried to find words to express their joy and relief. Anthony’s father spoke first: “Today, you have returned my son.”  {source}

What an amazing story of freedom!  I am so glad to share this with you!  May there be even more stories like this in the future.  Read more here.

Blessings,
Grace

Anthony and Silas were accused of a violent robbery and left in prison for more than two years until IJM Kenya took on their case.

St. Packrick's Day ~ More than Shamrocks and Leprechauns ~

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Today I want to tell you the story of St. Patrick's life and the reason why we celebrate this holiday.  You may think that shamrocks and little leprechauns have nothing to do with slavery, but if you look at the story--the true story--behind all of that you'll see something much bigger than just wearing green.

Just imagine...
Britain, fourth century A.D. it was just before Patrick turned 15, he and his family were at their holiday villa by the seaside, it was just before dawn; many were still sleeping when the pirates from a strange foreign land attacked the small villa on the hill.  Although Patrick's family escaped, Patrick, along with some of the workers, did not and he was soon en route to Ireland.  Patrick was sold as a slave, yes, a slave, to Miliuc of Slemich, a Druid tribal chieftain.  He was given the job of a herdsman.  During this time Patrick realized his need for God and began praying every day as he watched his master's sheep.

One night Patrick had a dream, and in it he heard a voice saying to him, "...Soon you will be returning to your own country."  Later he had another dream that said, "Come and see where your ship is waiting for you."  Twenty-two year old Patrick escaped and traveled 200 miles to the coast of Ireland, where a ship was beginning to set off.  The crew allowed him to come on as a passenger.  The journey by boat was long, including a stop on land where they journeyed for 28 days, after running out of food the captain challenged Patrick to ask his God for food.  Patrick was glad to oblige, and responded, "Turn trustily to the Lord who is my God and put your faith in him with all your heart, because nothing is impossible to Him. On this day, he will send us food sufficient for our journey, because for him there is abundance everywhere." when the men turned around a herd of pigs was standing right in front of them.  They feasted for days and gave thanks to God.

Two years later Patrick finally made it back to Britain and to his family who pleaded with him to never leave them again.  Patrick studied to become a priest and bishop.  But one night, he had a dream of a man who seemed to come from Ireland and was carrying a letter with the words "The Voice of the Irish", as Patrick read the words, he seemed to hear the voice of the same men he had worked with when he was a slave as if they were shouting, "Holy boy, we beg you, come back and walk once more among us."  So, though it cost him his title of nobility and the respect of many, Patrick traveled back to the land of his captivity--Ireland.  Patrick served, ministered, and taught the people of Ireland.  He was persecuted by many and he was often on the run, Patrick continued to teach the people of Ireland and led many to Christ.  He died on March 17th around the year 461 A. D. the day we celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

There is still slavery in the world TODAY.  Though you may not know, people are still sold as slaves in countries like India, Sudan, and even the United States. Yes, the United States!  Even in our own country women are sold to be sex slaves or factory workers.  In Sudan young boys are kidnapped and forced to fight in wars as child soldiers. In India, children are forced to work in brick kilns all day and beaten if they even try to escape.  Just like St. Patrick they are taken from their homes and treated terribly.  But there is hope.  If people like you and me stand up for those who have no voice, slavery will end.

Rescue in Bangalore India

BREAKING NEWS!!!

Last year IJM's (International Justice Mission) teams helped rescue 2,266 people from slavery in India—and they have begun this year with the same spirit of tenacity. IJM Bangalore just helped rescue nearly forty people from slavery in a single brick factory.

An IJM lawyer leader the families out of the brick factory
"The slaves worked around the clock—up to 20 hours a day. Children as young as 8 were working right alongside the adults. They were under constant supervision and forbidden from leaving for any reason. When our social worker met the families inside the factory, she was stunned by their swollen hands and open wounds from the hard labor.
It’s hard enough to imagine working 20 hours a day, let alone what it must be like to watch your 8-year-old working right beside you. I’m so grateful that the families rescued this week are on their way home right now, beginning to dream of a new future." Read more here.

Praise God that they were rescued!  People just like you and me are now able to thrive because of those who have supported IJM!  Stand with me and others  in the fight against slavery, so we can see more amazing rescues like this one.  Donate here.

Here are some staggering facts about human trafficking from International Justice mission.

"The facts uncover a devastating reality and show that, globally, it is the poorest people who are most vulnerable to being victimized. More than 4 billion people live outside the protection of the law—leaving them vastly more vulnerable to violent crimes."

"An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 children, women and men are annually trafficked across international borders according to the U.S. Department of State, and nearly two million children are in the commercial sex trade worldwide according to UNICEF."

"There are nearly 30 million children, women and men trafficking into modern slavery (both sex trafficking and forced labor)—that's enough to fill every seat at the Super Bowl every day for a year!" Read more of this article here.
